The X‑8 v.3 is widely regarded as one of the most dominant and best‑performing 8" subwoofers ever built. Over more than four years of continuous production, it has become one of Sundown Audio’s most popular models thanks to its extreme output, ultra‑linear suspension, and unmatched excursion capabilities.

Performance & Engineering

The v.3 builds on the legacy of the v1 and v2, surpassing both through a heavily FEA‑optimized spider and surround system. This suspension redesign is the core of its performance—delivering exceptional linearity, control, and low‑distortion output even at extreme excursion levels.

The X‑8 v.3 is built on Sundown’s custom‑tooled 8" frame, originally developed for the SA‑8 v2. Nearly a decade later, Sundown has pushed this platform to its absolute limit. The motor and coil structure support ~20mm of linear one‑way Xmax and approximately 2.4" peak‑to‑peak mechanical travel before the coil exits the gap. Physical bottoming occurs only slightly beyond that point.

To further reduce distortion, the motor includes an aluminum magnet ID shorting ring, along with additional proprietary Sundown techniques that enhance clarity and reduce inductive rise. The published 800W RMS rating is intentionally conservative, as the driver is engineered to handle significantly more real‑world abuse.
